EROSION CONTROL & REMEDIATION

ABOUT EROSION

It is important that the processes of erosion, and their causes, are fully understood to successfully control it.

Significant problems caused by erosion can develop rapidly or as a result of gradual changes through time. Unacceptable levels of erosion may:

Soil erosion is a common problem for agricultural and pastoral industries, construction activities, developers and the mining industry.

Problems Associated with Soil Erosion

Loss of vegetative cover

Revegetation is an important component of effective erosion & sediment control & for offsetting the impacts of development & land clearing. Landloch’s scientists regularly advise on the selection of appropriate forms & species of vegetation to meet site goals. We also advise on management of soil chemical & physical fertility, & on a wide range of seeding & site stabilisation practices to greatly increase the cost-effectiveness & success of revegetation works.

DIVERSION OR CONCENTRATION OF OVERLAND FLOWS

Concentration of runoff flows & de-stabilisation of flow paths are major causes of tunnel & gully erosion. This not only produces high rates of soil movement, but also renders land unproductive, exposing unstable or infertile deeper soil layers, & damages a range of infrastructure. We advise on options for remediation of tunnel & gully erosion, ranging from re-shaping land to reduce flow concentration to placement of surface stabilisation products, installation of leaky weirs, & soil amendment & revegetation.

UNSTABLE OR INFERTILE SOILS

Australian soils are often of low fertility, & unstable (dispersive) subsoils are common. Development works on such soils can result in significant on & off-site erosion during construction. Lasting problems with failed rehabilitation of completed works are common. Our scientists have extensive experience managing such soils. We assist with planning soil stripping, placement, amendment & fertilisation to minimise problems & on-going costs. The impacts of poor decisions during works can be very difficult to rectify later on.
